Fianna Fail Senator Fiona O’Loughlin has welcomed the development of a new centre-based respite facility for Athy. This facility will cater for Kildare, Wicklow West, Dublin West, Dublin South City, Dublin South West

Senator O’Loughlin said, “I am happy to see my colleague Minister Anne Rabitte TD announce increased alternative respite provision this year, which will enhance support for service users and their families as part of the HSE’s response to living with COVID-19.”

“The respite house will be located in Athy and the Service Provider will be KARE”

“This is a very welcome development; respite care is essential and unfortunately was curtailed due to the covid lockdowns”

“It is hoped that the new respite centre will open before the end of 2021. This will include afterschool respite for Children till 8pm, additional overnight respite for Children with additional support needs. There is also a project to review Respite provision, to identify any additional need in the area”

“I am working with families for which this is a huge need, particular for elderly parents, any widows who are finding it difficult, despite their huge love and support for their children with special needs”

Fiona concluded “Respite is a vital service and allows those caring for family members with disabilities to get a well-deserved break. The new centre-based respite facility in Athy will hopefully allow carers to avail of vital services”
