Lack of progress on new transport allowance

I recently questioned the Taoiseach on the lack of progress that has been made to date in relation to a new transport allowance that will assist people with disabilities that are unable to take public transport.

The Mobility Allowance was closed for any new applicants in 2013 by the then Government, Fine Gael and Labour; Its five years on and there is still no replacement for people who really need this service.

In November 2017 Minister Harris replied to a Parliamentary Question I asked stating that the policy proposals were at advanced stages and yet we are in May and we are still no further. The Taoiseach advised that a memorandum is due to come to the Cabinet in the next few weeks however, he could not predict how long that will take to get through the Dáil and Seanad.

It is expected that a new scheme will be in place next year sometime which is far too long for people already waiting years for a new scheme to be introduced

I will continue to call on the government to prioritise this legislation as it is impacting on thousands of people across the country
