Senator Fiona O’Loughlin welcomes free period products in Further Education and Training

Chair of the Oireachtas Women’s Caucus, Senator Fiona O’Loughlin has welcomed the announcement of the roll out of free period products in the Further Education and Training sector.

Senator O’Loughlin spoke on the announcement and said, “I am pleased to welcome this announcement which will see 9 colleges across 6 Education and Training Boards receive free and sustainable period products and dispensers.”

“Period poverty should be a thing of the past, and I am delighted to see my Government colleagues taking further action in this area. No student’s education should be compromised or neglected because of period poverty. This is a great starting point, and I am glad to see Ministers Harris and Collins committing to providing a range of free, adequate, safe, and suitable period products in all schools and third level colleges.”

“I offer my full support also to my female Fianna Fail colleagues this International Women’s Day who have been working tirelessly to bring this issue to light. Women have been suffering in silence for too long. I have been working closely with my colleague Lorraine Clifford-Lee and the HSE in connection to her Free Provision of Period Products Bill 2021.”

Concluding O’Loughlin said “This campaign will be vital in ensuring that learners in school or third level can fully focus on their education without having to worry about the costs of period products. I hope to see the success of this campaign and to see it rolled out in every ETB in the country.”
