Senator Fiona O’Loughlin welcomes the extension of the DEIS programme and called for Scoil Na Naomh Uilig in Newbridge to be included

Senator Fiona O’Loughlin called for Scoil Na Naomh Uilig to be included in the expanded DEIS programme.

Senator O’Loughlin said ” I was pleased to see a major expansion of the DEIS programme announced yesterday, and it is really welcome that it will see the programme extended to an additional 310 schools. I also welcome the fact that 37 existing DEIS schools are being reclassified and will be eligible for increased supports, which is incredibly important.”

“Yesterday’s announcement of a major expansion of the DEIS – Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools programme was very welcome, and the programme extended to an additional 7 schools in Kildare.”

“However, I am somewhat concerned. Scoil Na Naomh Uilig in Newbridge has still not been included, and I was quite shocked yesterday to see that they were not included. I have been liaising with the school community at a local level since I was elected to the Oireachtas in 2016 and we have been seeking access to the programme for this school. So, to see an of the expansion of the DEIS Programme not include them was very disappointing.”

Fiona concluded by saying “I will be liaising with Scoil Na Naomh Uilig and the Minister for Education to push for their inclusion. I am particularly concerned that this school will not have access to a home school liaison officer something that I feel would benefit the school community.”
