“Autism Good Practice Guidance for Schools – Supporting Children and Young People”

Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O’Loughlin has welcomed the announcement in advance of World Autism Month 2022. Today the Department have announced the publication of Autism Good Practice Guidance for Schools – Supporting Children and Young People.

This guidance document has been developed as a resource for schools to support the needs of students with autism. It aims to assist teachers, SNAs and others working with children and young people with autism in an education setting to understand their needs so there can be effective engagement.

Senator O’Loughlin said, “We need an education system that is fit for purpose and can support each and every student to reach their full potential. I have always advocated strongly for a fully inclusive education system, where children who have special educational needs are educated with their peers in their communities.”

“This guidance aims to ensure that all schools communities are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to adapt their culture, provision and environment so that all students can engage in meaningful, full-time participation in their school communities..”

Fiona concluded by saying “We have come a long way in terms of special education over the last number of years. I am confident that these supports will be of benefit to many students, their teachers and families.”
